Does lifting weights make you slow?
Every coach who has ever suggested a gym programme has heard it. Sometimes from a player, more often from a parent, occasionally from another coach: lifting will make him slow, or bulky, or tight.
It is the most persistent myth in football and it is worth understanding rather than just dismissing, because there is a small grain of truth buried in it.
What speed actually is
Sprinting is not about how fast your legs move. It is about how much force you put into the ground and how quickly.
At top speed your foot is on the floor for around a tenth of a second, and in that time you are pushing down with several times your body weight. Go faster by pushing harder in the same amount of time. There is no other mechanism.
Force is what a gym builds. That is the entire connection, and it is why the relationship between strength and sprint speed runs the way it does: stronger players are, on average, faster ones. Not because the squat is a sprint, but because the squat raises the ceiling on how hard you can push.
Where the myth comes from
Three real things got tangled together.
Bodybuilding. The gym most people picture is one built to add size. High volume, short rests, muscle worked to failure. That does add mass, and mass without matching force does slow you down. It is also not remotely what a footballer's programme looks like.
Soreness. Start lifting and you will be sore, and being sore makes you feel slow for a few days. That is an adaptation cost, not a permanent state, and it disappears once your body is used to the work.
Bad timing. A heavy session the day before a match will hurt your match. The lifting is not the problem. The scheduling is.
What actually happens
A footballer training strength properly does sets of three to six repetitions, with heavy loads, with long rests, twice a week. That is a stimulus for force production, not for size. You gain very little mass from it, and what you gain is the useful kind.
What you do gain is a jump that leaves the floor faster, a first step that covers more ground, a body that survives a duel, and hamstrings and calves that are considerably harder to tear.
The two ways it genuinely can cost you
Worth being honest about, because "it never happens" is not true.
You gain mass you do not need. If you train like a bodybuilder and eat like one, you will get heavier. A footballer who adds eight kilos of muscle and no force is slower, and that is a real, if uncommon, outcome. It requires deliberately training for size.
You do it at the wrong end of the session, or the wrong day of the week. Fast work needs you fresh. Jumps and sprints go first, when the nervous system is sharp; heavy lifting goes after; conditioning last. Heavy lower body work sits forty eight hours away from a match, not the day before.
What a footballer's week looks like
Two gym sessions. Each one starts with something explosive: a jump, a throw, a short sprint, low volume, full recovery, stopping while every rep still looks sharp. Then two or three heavy lifts, three to six reps, long rests. Then whatever specific work the player needs, usually hamstrings and calves.
Forty five minutes. Not five days a week. Not to failure. Not a pump.
Do that for a season and nobody will be telling you that lifting made you slow, because the evidence will be in how you look over the first five metres.
